Harper was born at 26 weeks in the fall of 2017. By Christmas 2017 it was evident that she would need long term hospitalization due to her need for long term ventilation. Her first few months were spent living minute by minute because her little body was struggling to keep up. Codes, transfusions, you name it. It was soon discovered that she would need a trach due to scar tissue forming in her airway, leaving her with a pin hole to breathe out of. During this time, I had very little support. My family lived over an hour and a half from Childrens, I was in an unhealthy/abusive relationship and spent my days glued to her bedside. I was afraid to leave because I didn't want to leave and not be there is she were to take a turn for the worse. Prior to having her, I was working as a case manager for another local non-profit. I had to leave that job due to her hospital stay and needing 24/7 care once she was home. I spent all of my savings on bills, food at the hospital and gas. At one point I ate one meal a day, out of the vending machine, because that's all I could afford. One bag of chips, a candy bar and a coke. Harper would spend the first 302 days of her life inside the hospital walls. She came home in August 2018 with a trach, gtube and on a ventilator 24 hours a day. Thankfully, she was able to wean off her vent by the time she turned 2. She has endured over 40 surgeries, three airway reconstructions, and countless other medical interventions to get her where she is today. Which lead me to Reviv. Unfortunately, we didn't have the blessing of knowing Maria or her mission while in the hospital, but, I found Reviv late one night on social media last year. They were advertising for volunteers and I just so happened to be looking for something to get me out of the house at the suggestions of my wonderful (now) husband. The moment I came in, I knew I found a place to make a difference. I officially joined the team in July 2021 and moved up to Family Support coordinator in 2022. My experiences with Harper were hard, and traumatic. Reviv allows me to use our journey to guide other families through their unique needs and challenges because we have faced many of them as well. I can now be the person I needed in 2017. I get to remind moms to take care of themselves, take a break, hold their hands on hard days and rejoice on the good days. Through Harper's will, bravery and sassy attitude, she taught me to never give up and I carry that with me every single day. She is the reason for everything and I'm glad we found Reviv as a home to share that lesson and continue to support families that need it most.
